Here are some movies I found interesting last year, in no particular order.

1. Poldark.
Definitely my ‘series of the year’. The story of Ross Poldark and George Warleggan as they battle for love and power in ancient Cornwall.
2. The Great Debaters.
My ‘movie of the year’. Directed by Denzel Washington. Made me weep like a child.
3. Fracture.
An exciting thriller for lovers of crime movies with unexpected plot twists. Outstanding performance by Anthony Hopkins.
4. Beyond the veil
A Northern-Nigeria drama that made for easy relaxation.
5. Baby reindeer.
If you think you’ve seen the best of love-obsession and weirdo movies, then you’ve not seen baby reindeer yet.
6. The Diplomat
A thriller for lovers of international politics and diplomacy.
7. The good liar
When a player gets played in his own game. Quite interesting.
8. The day of the Jackal (1973)
The original 1973 classic by Fredrick Forsyth. I’d seen it several times as a kid. Yet re-watching it half a century since it was first released still kept me at the edge of the seat. Best to watch it before seeing the recently released 2024 re-make.
9. Oppenheimer
A movie on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physicist who developed the first nuclear weapon used in World War II. “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds” (He said this while witnessing the first atomic bomb explosion in Los Alamos, New Mexico on July 16, 1945). Oppenheimer also said, “They wont fear it until they understand it, and they won’t understand it until they have used it”.
10. Afamefuna – an nwa boi story
The best movie I have seen come out of Nollywood. Simple and relatable, especially for middle-class Nigerians.
11. The Foreigner
A movie on the Anglo-Irish feud.
12. The Devil wears Prada
13. Pain Hustlers
The shocking reality of the economy of the opioid crisis in America.
14. Hunger
A movie on ambition and contentment which begs the question of which matters more, unbridled ambition or contentment often perceived as failure? When do we stop wanting more?
15. The imitation game
Genius! The story of Alan Turing, the British mathematician who proposed that machines can think and set out to prove it. His invention was crucial to ending the second world war.
16. Mrs Wilson
Based on a true life story, a woman who was shocked to the bones after discovering the ‘real life’ of her husband following his death.
17. The Crown Season (6)
A perfect ending to a formidable series.
18. Sons of the Caliphate (Season 2)
Probably the best Hausa drama out there.
19. War: Wrath and Revenge
A continuation of Sons of the Caliphate.
